March 23-April 1, 2012

A week of tours, talks, fashion, film and fun!

Our 8th Annual home tour will be held in the Marion Estates neighborhood on the border of Phoenix and Paradise Valley. This hilly enclave of custom homes was built out from 1952 – 1962 and features hidden gems by architects Ralph Haver, Blaine Drake and Al Beadle alongside contemporary remodels by Tennen Studio and Woolsey Studio.
Thirteen midcentury and contemporary homes in Marion Estates and nearby neighborhoods will be open for touring from 1 to 6 pm. This park and walk tour features eight homes within 1.5 miles walking distance of each other and five bonus homes accessible by car.

Five architects discuss their recent projects. Brian C. Farling, RA and Neal Jones, AIA LEED AP, Jones Studio Inc; Carlos Murrietta, AIA, CSI, LEED AP, SPS + Architects; Patrick Magness, AIA, Gensler; Thomas Durkin, AIA and Andrea Lucarelli, Associate AIA, Durkin + Durkin. OF SHOW”Infinite Space: The Architecture of John Lautner” hosted by No Festival Required
7:30 – 9 pm at the SMoCA Lounge

Infinite Space, a new documentary feature film, traces the lifelong quest of visionary genius John Lautner to create “architecture that has no beginning and no end.” It is the story of brilliance and of a complicated life – and the most sensual architecture of the 20th century. Renowned architectural filmmaker Murray Grigor explores Lautner’s dramatic spaces with choreographed camera moves, as Lautner himself provides the commentary, speaking with insight and wit in recordings culled from archival sources. Held at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Seating is limited. Screening begins at 7:30 PM; seating begins a 7 PM. Tickets are $7. RSVPA Night with Nelson at Design Within Reach
5:30 – 7 pm at Design Within Reach

“A Night with Nelson”, looks at the over 50-year career of George Nelson as an architect, writer, designer and teacher. His work includes concepts for the first modular office storage system, the first L-shaped work desk, the playful Marshmallow Sofa, among many other paradigm-shifting revelations. George Nelson & Associates worked with Herman Miller for over 25 years as they shepherded design into a new era. The presentation features prerecorded conversations with George from the oral history done with him in 1981. Presented by John Berry, former VP Corporate Communications at Herman Miller, who adds his own personal anecdotes from his times with George. Presentation begins at 6pm.
