Hearts of Space Promos

“NORDIC FLIGHT”
The yearning, glacial sound of Norwegian musician JAN GARBAREK’s tenor saxophone. It’s traveled far and wide from his home base at the Arctic edge of Europe. He was the very first artist on the indispensable ECM label. In fact, it’s hard to imagine ECM without Norway; many of the musicians are based there, and Oslo is ground zero for Rainbow Studios, home of the crystalline, passionate ECM sound.

“PIANOSCAPES 3”
In its three hundred year history, the piano has grown both larger and smaller, gone electric and then electronic, and been the anchor and reference point for a sizeable fraction of Western music. Through it all, the range, versatility, rhythmic clarity and melodic appeal of the instrument has kept it at the forefront of music from pop, to jazz, to classical.

“ELECTROSPHERE”
Electronic music has been evolving for the better part of a century now. The novelty has come and gone, and in recent years, electronics have found their way into dozens of genres. But there’s one place where it really feels like home: electronic spacemusic.

Whether cruising across distant starfields, drifting through clouds of interstellar dust, or just floating peacefully in the good ole cosmic soup, spacemusic takes us to a galaxy far, far away. That may be escapism, but hey, we like it. We might even need it. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we harvest a nice crop of melodic/chordal spacemusic on a program called ELECTROSPHERE.

For a few rare artists, the piano can be magically transformed into a personal voice — a heart to heart communication channel direct to the listener. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, we listen for that personal touch, on a contemplative journey called PIANOSCAPES 3.

“GLACIER BAY”
Cold, clear and quiet, we drift through frozen lakes and glacial terrain on a journey to the heart of winter. It’s a sound of tiny movements locked within great static masses, deep drones and crystalline accents, punctuated by the reverberation of great natural events

“INFINITE GUITARS”
Back in 1990, we did a program called “Mostly Infinite Guitars” celebrating MICHAEL BROOK’s effort to dematerialize the electric guitar. The title was kind of cute, and we found more music, so three years later we followed it up with an even cuterone called “More Infinite Guitars.”

Fast forward to 2006. Other guitar shows have come and gone, and once again we have lots of great material for a new show. We_could_call it “Still More Infinite Guitars,” but you know, we didn’t really start this series properly. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a retro-future-ambient-guitar journey called just plain “INFINITE GUITARS.”

iTunes Weekly Rewind Podcast Marathon

This week, we’re listening in on some of the best music of 2010, as chosen by iTunes staff members.

If April is the cruelest month, perhaps December is the most contentious, as the annual ritual of compiling “Best Of” lists generates a frenzy of critical opinion and enough heated discussion to light up a forest of transplanted fir trees. We hope you enjoyed our reasons for highlighting the work of the Black Keys, Eminem, Lady Antebellum and Bruno Mars, among other 2010 standouts, but we feel a little guilty for not devoting more podcast minutes to briefly mentioned breakthrough act, Best Coast. Here’s why we think they’re here to stay.

Fronted by Bethany Cosentino, with staunch support from Bobb Bruno and recently inducted drummer Ali Koehler, Best Coast has cracked a winning noise-pop formula by striking a near-perfect balance of familiar elements — cruise through debut album Crazy for You, on which most songs clock in around the two-and-a-half minute mark, and you’ll find “echoes” (and we choose the word with care, given the reverberating sonic feel of the release) of punk era wizards the Ramones and the Buzzcocks, a plethora of surf and garage rockers old and new, modern West Coast wonder-girl Jenny Lewis (who shares with Cosentino a pre-pubescent brush with L.A. showbiz), and those ’60s girl groups distinguished by collaboration with Phil Spector. Wherever distortion appears on the album, it’s an unforced accent, not a mechanical assault, and you quickly find yourself wanting to sink deeper into the band’s comforting layers of pop-fuzz.

While Cosentino indulges a lyrical obsession with romance, indolence and cats, there’s far more going on here than first meets the ear. Check out “When I’m With You” and you’ll hear an artist who hits an honest emotional note without spilling her guts all over the place: the way she slowly and sweetly drawls “I hate sleeping alone” will follow you from shower to sidewalk — in fact, every track here nails the old grey whistle test, pop’s most fundamental measuring stick. The charm of the album’s title track emerges from the way she’s so upbeat about all the things that drive her mad about her other half. If you’d like a sense of where this hugely promising outfit is heading, cue up “Our Deal” which follows a thread of emotional complexity without ever deserting the band’s simple songwriting principles. Watch this space.

This week, we’re listening in on music from R. Kelly, Dave Brubeck, Keith Urban, and Annie Lennox

This week, we’re listening in on the band Rush (as featured in I Love You Man), soundtrack work from Booker T. & The M.G.’s, The Mar-Keys, and Peter Gabriel, and the music of Michael Penn, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, and Digital Underground.

While we’re talking about songs that make frequent appearances we need to call out the mother of all media friendly songs — Katrina and the Waves “Walking On Sunshine.” Its musically sunny disposition and sharp poppy horn embellishments have made it the go-to song to connote optimism, good times, or anything upbeat, and landed it in numerous trailers, movies, and TV shows. Katrina and the Waves, like this week’s genius picks Marshall Crenshaw and the Shocking Blue, are the undeserving recipients of one-hit wonder status. A quick trip to their anthology offers up minor sparkling pop gems “Going Back To Liverpool” (made famous by The Bangles), “Sunny Street,” and the rock inspired Pat Benatar-esque “Do You Want Crying.” But the real surprise here is the revelation of Katrina Leskanich as soul singer on both the Aretha/Annie Lennox like “Is That It” and the should-have-been-covered-by-Etta James “The Sun Won’t Shine”.
