True, SXSW is a premiere showcase for indie rock, but the doors are still open for alt-country artists, hip-hop perfromers and even experimental acts. It took getting noticed in Seattle, WA before Aaron Behrens and Thomas Turner of Austin’s Ghostland Observatory got serious airtime in their hometown. The Murrow Awards-named for pioneering newsman Edward R. Murrow -are given out by the Radio-Television News Directors’ Association (Murrow gave his immortal “lights in a box” speech to a meeting of the RTNDA in the late & 50’s.) We’re proud to announce that KUT’s Texas Music Matters has won regional Murrow Awards in two categories this year: Best Feature Story for “The Devil and Daniel Johnston” and Best Use of Sound for “Kashmere Stage Band”. In addition, KUT News has won Best Documentary for Rediscovering Barbara Jordan (produced and reported by Wayne Bell and edited by Emily Donahue). Billy Joe Shaver faces aggravated assault and weapons charges following a shooting outside a bar 90 miles north of Austin. The singer-songwriter’s attorney claims Shaver shot in self-defense.
